Surgical Services

By

We offer a full line of surgical services including routine spay/neuter procedures to more complex orthopedic procedures such as knee repair. We also offer oral surgery as well as surgical A.I.  Lewisburg Animal Hospital utilizes gas anesthesia, warm water blankets, and a Hot Dog Patient Warming System for thermoregulation, and monitoring equipment such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure measurement, heart rate monitoring, ECG, and respiratory monitoring to help assure the safety of your pet during surgical procedures. In addition, a technician is assigned to monitor your pet during its anesthetic procedure.
We begin most general anesthetic procedures by administering a sedative to help the pet relax and decrease any anxiety and pain. We then administer an intravenous drug to provide complete anesthesia and place a breathing tube into the patient’s trachea (windpipe). To maintain the state of unconsciousness, we deliver a gas anesthetic in combination with oxygen through the breathing tube.
In some instances your pet’s procedure can be performed with mild sedation and local anesthetic.
We know your pet is your baby, so we strive to make their surgical procedure and recovery as comfortable as possible. We provide pain control routinely with all surgeries, and we monitor them closely as they awaken from anesthesia.

Specialty Surgery

By

Sometimes pets have a need for advanced procedures in which general practice veterinarians are not equipped. While we offer many surgical procedures in house, when your pet needs advanced orthopedic, neurologic, or soft tissue surgery, we call in the expertise of a referral surgeon. Depending on the procedure needed our doctors will council you to help you make the best decision for optimal recovery.
In many cases we will refer to a mobile surgeon who will consult with our doctors about your pet’s surgical procedure and will perform this procedure at our hospital.
The doctors at Lewisburg Animal Hospital will care for your pet right up to the procedure and then provide follow up care after the surgery. Our clients enjoy the convenience of being able to have their pet’s advanced surgery right here in town.

Caesarian Section

By

Most animals give birth without any complications. However, mothers occasionally need help with delivery. We usually attempt to resolve the problem using medical therapy first, but when that doesn’t solve the issue, we will perform a caesarian section.
During a c-section, the mother is given an anesthetic. An incision is then made along her abdomen and through the uterus to retrieve unborn puppies or kittens. In some situations, we may recommend that the mother be spayed during this procedure, usually to prevent future problems of this nature.

Dentistry

By

An average of 85% of pets over the age of two years have dental disease which can lead to oral pain, bad breath, and early tooth loss. Some pets may need professional dental care as often as twice a year. Lewisburg Animal Hospital provides complete scaling and polishing of your pet’s pearly whites and dental extractions when necessary.
Many owners feel advanced age prohibits their pet from undergoing dental procedures. This is simply not true as most of our patients undergoing dental procedures are geriatric. Many owners report their older dogs becoming much more active after addressing dental disease.
During dental procedures, we utilize gas anesthesia as well as local anesthetic blocks in the case of dental extractions.  Local dental blocks help to assure patient safety by minimizing the amount of general anesthesia needed. At our hospital, we ALWAYS have a technician monitoring our anesthetized patients, and we utilize monitoring equipment that measures blood pressure, oxygen levels, heart rate, body temperature, and ECG. In addition, we utilize warming systems such as the Hot Dog Warming System or Circulating Warm Water Blankets to maintain patient body temperature during dental procedures.

Spaying

By

Spaying your pet has many benefits. The procedure, which prevents female animals from becoming pregnant and reproducing, can help your dog or cat live a longer, healthier life. Spaying will not change your pet’s personality.
By spaying your female pet, you’re protecting her against potentially deadly diseases, including bacterial infections, reproductive tract diseases, and several types of cancer. You also won’t have to worry about her going into heat. This means avoiding the mess that often accompanies the heat cycle in female dogs and the pacing and crying that happens with female cats. In addition, spaying your pet will help control the dog and cat overpopulation problem, keeping more animals out of shelters.
Spaying, which involves removing the ovaries and uterus, is a surgical procedure and does need to be performed with the pet under anesthesia. We follow strict protocols and continually monitor your pet’s vital signs to help ensure her safety.
To set up an appointment to have your pet spayed or to learn more about this procedure, call or visit our clinic. If you are struggling with the decision of whether to spay your pet, please call us so we can discuss your concerns.

Neutering

By

Neutering your pet has many benefits. The procedure, which prevents male animals from reproducing, can help your dog or cat live a longer, healthier life. Neutering will not change your pet’s personality.
By neutering your pet, you’re reducing or eliminating his risk for prostate and testicular cancer, as well as sexually transmitted diseases. Neutering will also reduce or eliminate undesirable and embarrassing behavior, including roaming, fighting, humping, and spraying. In addition, neutering your pet will help control the dog and cat overpopulation problem, keeping more animals out of shelters.
Neutering, which involves removing the testicles, is a surgical procedure and does need to be performed with the pet under anesthesia. We follow strict protocols and continually monitor your pet’s vital signs to help ensure his safety.
To set up an appointment to have your pet neutered or to learn more about this procedure, please call or visit our clinic. If you are struggling with the decision of whether to neuter your pet, please call us or stop by so we can discuss your concerns.

Soft Tissue Surgery

By

We perform many types of soft tissue surgeries at our clinic. Soft tissue surgeries are those that are not associated with bone. Common soft tissue surgeries performed at our hospital include removal of gastrointestinal foreign bodies, bladder stone removal, eye surgery, laceration/wound repair, and mass removals.
Probably the most common soft tissue surgery performed on pets is the removal of masses, or lumps. Most of these masses, once removed and tested, are found to be benign (nonharmful); however, occasionally they are more serious. Early removal and accurate diagnosis of a lump is necessary to improve the outcome in your pet if the mass is cancerous.

Orthopedic Surgery

By

Our doctors can perform several orthopedic procedures such as some fracture repairs, femoral head ostectomies, amputations, and some cruciate ligament repairs. In other instances, we will recommend a board-certified surgeon to perform surgery on your pet. In these more advanced cases, we can usually have a mobile surgeon who can perform the surgery at our hospital. In other cases, we will refer to a specialty hospital.
